So it doesn’t matter enough to the plot to really get into it in the story, but if you were curious, the way these glasses work is that you can see the hologram of the person you’re talking to without them. It’s an actual hologram physically projected onto water vapour in front of you. But in order to see the whole person as well as their surroundings, you need to put the glasses on and then you can see the rest of the scene filled in. Also, people often edit their own glasses out of their hologram, because that’s easy to do.

Panel 3: Maida: "So you've... discussed the concept of people going on dates?" Zaynab, blushing again: "Maidaaa!!"
Panel 4: Maida: "Alright, alright, I'm sorry." Zaynab puts her glasses on so she can see more than just Maida's face. Maida is sitting on a concrete and tile balcony with some poorly-maintained potted plants. Zaynab: "Oh I fought you were at home. This is the top of your building, yeh?"
Panel 5: Maida: "Yeah, there's lots of quiet corners up here. Though there's no guarantee the old lady who does 'community safety' will leave us alone."
